Mindfulness is a practice that involves living in the present moment instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. It's estimated that we spend around 80% of our lives lost in thought, either ruminating over past experiences or fretting about what's to come. Mindfulness can help us live in the present moment and enjoy life to the fullest.
Research suggests we can only experience true happiness when living in the moment. If you remember, you were pleased; you were likely surrounded by loved ones, enjoying the experience and not preoccupied with your thoughts.
On average, we have around 60,000 thoughts per day. Many of these thoughts are mundane, such as thinking about what to have for dinner or reminding ourselves to buy bread on the way home. However, many thoughts are linked to emotions and can impact physical and mental well-being. Stress and anxiety can lead to headaches, sore throats, and other ailments. This is why we must be aware of our thoughts and feelings and how they affect us.
We often spend a lot of time worrying about the future, but the future is just a story we create in our minds. Nobody can predict the future, so worrying about something that may never happen is pointless. By creating stories in our minds, we set ourselves up for disappointment and frustration when things don't go as planned.
Mindfulness is all about being present and aware of our thoughts and feelings in the moment. Practising mindfulness teaches us more about ourselves and how we react in various situations. This helps us become more accepting and less judgmental of ourselves and others.
